The right panel style depends mainly on what you're keeping in or out. Tube panel uses horizontal tubes spaced across the gate frame, making it lighter and more economical — a practical choice for cattle, horses, or other large livestock that aren't likely to push through the gaps between tubes. Welded mesh panel has much tighter spacing, which matters if you're containing sheep, goats, or other smaller animals that could otherwise slip through a tube gate's wider gaps, or if predator exclusion is a concern.
If your gate needs to serve a mixed herd — for example, cattle alongside sheep or goats — mesh panel is generally the safer choice, since tube spacing that's fine for cattle may not be tight enough for smaller animals.
One of the most common issues with farm gates isn't the gate itself — it's the gap that forms underneath when the gate is installed on uneven or sloped ground. A gap that's too wide lets smaller livestock slip under, or gives predators an opening.
